“Black women are beautiful because we exist”
For far to long we have had to prove our bodies, our beauty & our names not only to others but to ourselves. Why is it that we try to look like them yet they try to look like us, and neither ever achieve the goal.
It becomes difficult to understand who you are when the stories of your mothers, for so long have been cut short, chopped and screwed. At times, it becomes too heavy to bear our own name that we take on names of what we think we are or of what we think we aspire to be. Our mothers and their mothers were, and remain- queens and in understanding our name we begin to understand our value.
And then we come to learn that the real beauty.. our real beauty is in our collective spirit. Our ability to persist, resist, dream, believe, smile, and press through. All of this expressed in an exterior that exudes light and a history so rich- a history far before our body and mind were redefined….chopped and screwed.
Look in the mirror and take it back- take it all back.
Black woman, you are beautiful because you are you.
